We go to great lengths not to spill or drop any of the vehicle’s fluids on the ground. Accidents do happen but not as often as you might think. We then send these fluids out to be recycled. Renters Left a Car on My Property What Do I Do?

Renters Left a Car on my Property How do I get a Certificate of Authority To Dispose of the Vehicle.

I get a lot of calls from homeowners with an old junk car that was left a car on their property from a tenant.  I always advise the property owners the same thing. You have to do a certificate of authority also known as a COA. These are very easy to do and allow you to dispose legally of a vehicle, which is abandoned on your property. Once a COA is done the vehicle can never be put back on the road it is marked as salvage. This is a legal way of obtaining the authority to dispose of the vehicle. Once your COA comes in from the state, we can accept this in place of a title.

I have heard that a few people have placed a small claim civil suit on the former residents that abandoned a vehicle on their property, and the civil judge has issued or judged that the owner of the property has rights to this vehicle, but I have never experienced this.

Can I remove these without you going through any of this? Yes, but we will have to remove the vehicle and place it on a state approved storage lot. If I do this, I cannot pay anything for the vehicle. The storage lot directly pays my company for a tow. We are not able to retain the vehicle once it is placed in storage. By state law, it must be auctioned off.

Recently I have had a few complaints on a couple of companies that operate online and are purchasing cars in the Houston Area; these are online junk car buyer scam sites and businesses. We have had more than a few of our local customers, contact us. Normally we hear a few complaints about other junk car buyers, but we have listened to a lot more, than usual, about this scam going around.

How does the Junk Car Buyer Scams work?

Here is what’s going on, a person wanting to sell their car uses a search engine to find a junk car buyer. They then contact one of the results in the search engine. Searching terms like “Houston Junk Car Buyers” or similar terms.  The company gives them an estimate on what they are willing to pay for the vehicle. (Usually more than what any local salvage company is willing or able to pay). If the person accepts the offer, the buyer then sends you an envelope containing a few pieces of paperwork for you to sign and return.

This is all fine, but the problem with this is that you have to return the title to your vehicle with the paperwork. The paperwork that you sign is paperwork that you are giving up all rights to your vehicle.

The companies tell you not to worry “We are sending a wrecker to pick up your car.” The thing is the wrecker does not have the payment for the vehicle or a way to pay you. The company says that they are going to send you a payment for the car in the mail. Since you sent them the paperwork, voluntarily this becomes a civil matter, not a criminal. Because the only way to get your money is to sue the company in court. Most of the time it is almost imposable to find out the legal owner or company. What’s odd is they will not send a wrecker until they receive your paperwork, then why can’t the wrecker at least bring the check? They are advertising junk car, buyer, cash!

I will not name any of the companies’ names due to legal reasons. My legal team says that it is not allowed.
